While I am happy that suspensions are down overall…there’s a lot of work ahead of us. That’s an unfortunate choice to make on the part of Dr. Morgan and team. This is what happens when only the “smart” people are in the room. Might be even more unfortunate that the actual board didn’t address the presentation. Perhaps they all didn’t realize it was a derogatory term. Before this article I did not either

The slides for the presentation should never have been created using the term SPED. Someone at D'Amico's level of research should absolutely have known that and I'm wondering why he didn't. Like the Eclipse-gate episode, there are layers of people these things pass by, and nobody catches the mistakes. That's not good. I really don't know what to think of the board at this point. I think they are in a timid posture, except for that recent meeting when Mr. Briggs decided to talk tough to the library board about fiscal irresponsibility.

I have tried with Jonah to use person-first language since his diagnosis but the other day he told me, bluntly, that he prefers to be called Autistic. I'm always learning new things.

Data is only useful when defining causation is the goal. CMSD is taking on a fool’s errand if they strive to correlate discipline numbers with high rated school districts like Solon, Olmsted Falls & Orange and expect similar State-mandated standardized test scores. Dr Morgan and Mayor Bibb can dance around the pitfalls of generational poverty all they want but Cleveland residents rank amongst the poorest urban residents in America. Spending property tax dollars to drive development aimed at affluent Greater Cleavelanders doesn’t help the poor.

UPDATE: In this morning's Signal Cleveland email newsletter, education reported Michael Indriolo writes that Dr. Morgan does not believe the term "sped" is derogatory and claims that it is widely used in education circles. I really appreciated Signal Cleveland looking into this.

Arnold Pinckney was a convicted felon...died extremely wealthy.

Kudus to Dr Morgan for not saying retarded however...

Wonder what his Doctoral thesis was about and how useful his original research has been to Education.

The former Superintendent of Shaker Schools, Mark Freeman's(who wasn't a great Shop teacher) Doctoral thesis from Kent State University was a useless comparison of some forgettable nonsense and I was the only scholar to have ever removed it from the Kent State library.

Hopefully Dr Morgan is enhancing the reputation of his alma mater unlike Mayor Bibb who failed the Ohio State Bar exam twice after attending Case Law school.

Tarnished and burnished get mixed up a lot...
